Exercise review and a menopause discovery

76.2kg 30th Oct 2011

I don't have any trouble keeping up my exercise. I do have to keep a good eye on how I feel when I try out different things. If I try to do too much each day I end up with a sore knee or just feeling fatigued.
I have tried some new weights routines. Even when I change the muscle groups that are targeted I can't manage the weights every day so I have settled for every second day.

I found it was a bit fatiguing if I tried to do the jog, the weights and the yoga on one day so I have settled for walking for 10 mins then 30 mins of weights ( I have 5 or 6 routines to choose from) on one day then jogging and yoga on the other day. Day seven I have a break. This seems to be working well.
Even if something comes up that cuts my time I try to fit in the walk or jog at least.

A Strange Discovery
Over the past three months I have noticed that I have felt decidedly grouchy for about a week each month and I experience hot flushes that week as well. This is the third month and there is definitely a 4 week pattern here. I have been in menopause for 6 years and I have only just noticed this. I had noticed that I can go for several weeks on a healthy diet then have to break out and have biscuits or cakes or soft drink for a week or so then I get back on to the healthy diet. I thought it was just a sugar addiction thing but maybe it was a hormone thing.

How can this be? I would have thought that by now my hormones would be settled down.

I have now marked each fourth week on my iCal with a red event colour. I am hoping that being more aware of this PMS type cycle I will be able to eat better and feel better in the off week. I have a magnesium/zinc/B6 vitamin pill that claims it is good for reducing PMS symptoms so I will take this the week before and maybe try to keep sugary foods out of the house for this week. It is worth a try. I hate the depressed and useless feeling I get in this week.

Has anyone else noticed a cycle like this well into their menopause?

Keeping healthy is such a challenge.

Cheers,
Val

Exercise update - September 2011

76.0kg Sept 2nd

I love the jogging/walking that I have added on to my routine. I feel tired after the yoga and weights but then I do the 10 mins on the road and I feel quite energised.
I have increased the routine so now I do
30 mins of flowing yoga or static yoga then 20 - 30 mins of weights then 10 mins walking/jogging up the road. I have done this for nearly two weeks and just now find that it might be a bit intense to keep up. I was doing three days on and one free.
I am now going to add in a week of yoga and jogging one day then yoga and weights and jogging the next then repeat for six days and have a day off. I don't want to run myself down. I am paying attention to my diet eating plenty of antioxidants and protein and veges and also taking a vitamin B stress complex.
I am not losing a lot of weight because I am eating too much but I look a better shape because of  all the exercise I am doing.

I feel pretty good.

Cheers,
Val

Two steps forward, one step back

20th Aug
76.0kg
After getting to 73.9kg I found it impossible to lose any more. Then I went to Adelaide and all the teas and dinners out made life fun but not so good for losing weight :)
I came back at about 76.7kg.
DH and I are determined if not exactly restrained. We are trying clean eating which leaves out the sugar and nasty fats. We are working on it together which is great. DH is trying to increase the amount of fibre he eats which suits me.
We have gone two weeks now without empty kilojoules.
I have increased my exercise. For 12 months I have done 6 days a week of yoga, stretching and weights. I felt I needed more so started to walk/jog to the end of the street as well for 10 mins. I have now changed the weights routine to make it more intense and will probably put the yoga and stretching in front of the weights each day and then do the walk/jog. All up about 70 mins in the morning. I may need two rest days but I will play it by ear.
I bought Oxygen magazine and love it. It had the new weights routines that I am now following and lots of diet and exercise info.
We continue to educate ourselves - Dr Oz is good - and we will one day be healthy and at a healthy weight.

Cheers,
Val

Easier this time

30th May 2011 - 74.3kg
Tomorrow is the official weigh in but I felt like posting today. Both my husband and I have noticed that once we got back onto counting the kJ it seemed easier to stay below 5000 than it was before Christmas.

We were close to losing the old habits after about 6 months of working at it before Christmas then we said we would not count or be too careful over Christmas. Big mistake! After a few days we just fell back into our old eating habits of too much of the high kJ food snacks and too big meal servings. We have been reeling ourselves in for 3 months and this month we have toed the line again. Surprisingly, but it shouldn't be a surprise I guess, we have found it easier than last time to stay with the routine.

We must have formed some habit thinking and acting brain paths last year, like a small rut, that we seem to have fallen back into this time. We hope to dig that rut deeper this time so that special events don't pull us off the track.

We don't restrict the type of food we eat too much though we have agreed that tim tams and coffee are not suitable for breakfast and we can't have a double serve of ice cream and cake instead of the chicken and veg for lunch.
I do have pikelets and jam for breakfast because they contain egg and milk. I do have home made chips with tomato sauce for dinner as long as I have had meat and two colourful veges for lunch. So we massage the menu plan but stay within our agreed rules.

This week I lost a kg the day I was sick but 4 days later I still haven't put it back on so I figure I would have got here anyway.

Happy Life Journey

Slowly , Slowly

75.5kg
I have been adjusting how much I eat gradually from maintaining to losing a bit now. I have been making my meals just a bit smaller over the last few weeks til I am now at a point where I am losing some rather than maintaining. Of course, I want to lose a kg a week but I just like my food too much. I am satisfied to lose a bit.

Starting to get on top of it

75.8kg
Can't believe it is April and I have just started to lose weight again. Better late than never though. It has taken me a while to get back into eating smaller meals and less snacks. Each day I cut back a bit more. It is interesting how I can eat much more than I need. Survival thing I suppose. Cutting back goes against instinct so to get back to a 5000kJ diet it has to happen gradually so my body and brain can accept it. That's my reasoning anyway :)
Eating less meat is a help. I like beans and lentils and vege stuff and it fills me up with less kJ than meat. I have started to eat meat once a day now. I still like some empty kJ. I don't think I will ever get to the stage where I don't want unhealthy things.

high inertia

75.9kg
Man it is hard to get that momentum back after Christmas. I am still trying to lose the 2 kilo I put on. Ah well, I will get it under control again.I am trying to stick to my 4 meal routine. Mooching in the kitchen is really dangerous so I am trying to eat by the clock. I am not really hungry most of the time I go looking for snacks. I just have to keep telling myself, "You don't need it now. Eat by the clock. Plan plan plan. Maybe sew sew sew some more too."

Getting over Christmas

75kg
I put on a bit over Christmas but I am slowly getting it under control. It is hard work. I put a little weight tracker on my google home page. It is cute and will inspire me to continue to lose weight.
